A large genus native to the southern hemisphere and southeast Asia, the hardy alpine totaras, or plum pines, require a well-drained site in full sun or partial shade. Their spreading, evergreen branches make a low, conifer-like shrub with drupe-like fruits late in the season. Though they tolerate dry conditions for short periods, some summer water is necessary where drought is a threat. Excellent in coastal areas.
