'Oakhurst' Pineapple Lily

Detailed Description

H18 in. x W18 in. Dramatic clumps of deep burgundy foliage rise from large bulbs, and bloom in summer with pineapple-form flower heads in the same hue. Full sun enriches the color, and the bulbs should be planted in rich, moist soil that drains adequately. In the North, bulbs may be dug and stored for winter after the leaves have frosted back. Also notable as a long-lasting cut flower. Hardy to Zone 7.

Mostly from the Eastern Cape of South Africa, these perennials grow from a large bulb that forms several new offsets a year as it matures. Allow to clump, or dig and divide every 2-3 years. These surprisingly hardy plants relish rich, moist loam with no standing water in winter while they are dormant, and plenty of sun and moisture during summer growth and bloom. Protect with a thick gravel mulch in cold areas, and be patient in spring- they may be slow to wake.
